How to Tell if Your Silverware Is Real Thing or Silver-Plated

If you have any silverware in your home, you might be wondering if it’s real sterling silver or just silver-plated. Or perhaps you want to start buying silver, but first want to know how to spot the best pieces for investment. There are a few simple tricks to learn to make sure you can spot the best silver pieces.

Silverware

1. Look for signs of wear

You might need a magnifying glass, but look at areas of an object subject to wear, such as the bottom of feet on a cream jug. These areas are most likely to get worn, and if the item is plated, you will see that the colour is different. It will usually be a red or gold colour (depending on the alloy under the plating). If you are not too precious about the object, you can also use a file to cut a ridge into the surface. Again, plated items will show a red or gold colour. Solid silver items will be a similar colour however deep you cut through it.

2. Is there a hallmark?

Although fake silver does exist, it is incredibly rare. That means that if the item is stamped with a silver hallmark, you can be sure it is fine. Plated hallmarks are incredibly varied, but will never include the lion passant, which is the English symbol for sterling silver. Continental silver however has many different markings, so if in doubt, you can always contact me for confirmation.

3. Acid Testing

Acid testing kits are available, although should be handled with great caution. Please contact me for more information.
